How to add a Turnitin Assignment

Standard settings

  • Assignment title
    • The name of this Turnitin assignment.
  • Point value
    • How much this assignment is out of. If it is not used for marking enter 0.
  • Start date
    • When this assignment is available to student for submissions.
  • Due date
    • Date in which this assignment is due.
  • Post date
    • This is a date when the grades and GradeMark feedback in this Turnitin assignment is released to your students. If you are marking in Turnitin, please make sure you have this date set far enough in the future to give you enough time for marking. This date will only take effect when the setting for ‘Reveal grades to students only on post date?‘ is set to Yes.
  • Allow only file types that Turnitin can check for originality
    • Use only this option as Turnitin cannot check for originality using other file types. Turnitin accepts submissions in these formats:
      • Microsoft Word™ (DOC and DOCX)
      • Corel WordPerfect®
      • HTML
      • Adobe PostScript®
      • Plain text (TXT)
      • Rich Text Format (RTF)
      • Portable Document Format (PDF)
      • Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT, PPTX, and PPS)
      • Hangul (HWP)

Optional Settings – please open up the optional settings to double check that the Turnitin assignment is set to what you need.

  • Enter special instructions:
    • Text entered here will appear as the description of this assignment in Blackboard.
  • Allow submissions after due date?
    • Whether students are able to submit assignments after the Due date. It is recommended that you set this option to Yes to allow exceptions.
  • Generate Originality Reports for submissions?
    • Whether originality reports will be generated. This option normally should be set to Yes.
  • Generate Originality Reports for student submissions:
    • immediately first report is final – this option allows the Originality Report to be generated immediately. With this option selected your students will only be allow to submit this assignment once.
    • immediately (can overwrite reports until due date) – this option allows resubmissions. Students can continuously resubmit to the assignment until the due date. It may take up to 24 hours to process Originality Reports for resubmissions.
    • on due date – this option will only generate an Originality Report on the due date. This setting will make it so all student submissions to the assignment will be compared against each other when the Originality Reports are created.
  • Exclude bibliographic materials from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment?
    • Whether to exclude bibliographic materials. If you are new to use Turnitin, it is recommended that you set this option to No.
  • Exclude quoted materials from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment?
    • Whether to exclude matches that are enclosed by quotations. If you are new to use Turnitin, it is recommended that you set this option to No.
  • Exclude small matches?
    • Whether to exclude matches based on word count or a percentage. If you are new to use Turnitin, it is recommended that you set this option to No.
  • Allow students to see Originality Reports?
    • Whether students can see the originality reports generated by Turnitin.
  • Reveal grades to students only on post date?
    • If you are marking online and would like to release grades and GradeMark feedback on a set date (Post date) to your students, please use the option Yes. If you prefer the students to see the grades and feedback as soon as you’ve marked them, please use the option No.
  • Submit papers to:
    • All options under Submit papers should be left as they are.
